American teacher sacked after 'mourning how Donald Trump survived assassination attempt'

An American teacher has been sacked after posting a video in which she appeared to say she was disappointed that Donald Trump survived his assassination attempt on Saturday.

Corinne Baum, a teacher for pre-school provider BrightPath, posted a clip on TikTok captioned: "Waking up to the news but not THAT news".

In the video, she said: "Man, there's been a few creators on here saying that like Friday or yesterday could have been the day and then I wake up to that news, but not that news.

"We're going to have to pay really close attention to what they're trying to actually distract us from."

On Monday, a spokesman for BrightPath said: "Our organisation does not tolerate and explicitly condemns any calls for violence.

"The comments made online by this individual are deeply inconsistent with our values. The individual in question has been terminated."

Ms Baum's LinkedIn said she worked at The Children's House, which rebranded to BrightPath in 2023.

Ms Baum was working at BrightPath Bridgetown Child Care Centre, a centre for pre-school aged children, as of Sunday, according to Fox News.

The Children's House had six locations before joining the BrightPath group.

Fox News reported that a friend of Ms Baum said she was not interested in commenting.

The friend said Ms Baum was "going through a difficult time" and was "distraught".

Saturday's assassination attempt on the President was the third attempt on his life in two years.

Mr Trump and First Lady Melania were rushed out of the Washington Hilton hotel as shots rung out on Saturday.

Suspect Cole Tomas Allen, 31, has now been charged with trying to assassinate the President, interstate transportation of weapons, and discharge of a firearm during a violent crime.

He is set to next appear in court on May 11 for a pre-trial hearing.

He appeared in court wearing a blue jumpsuit and was led into court by marshals.

Court documents alleged Allen had a 12-gauge pump action shotgun and a Rock Island Armory .38-calibre pistol, both purchased in California.

He apologised to his family and said he planned to assassinate members of Mr Trump's administration, a note seen in a court document alleged.

The White House met with both the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security to address security for major events as the President hosts King Charles this week.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said law enforcement "did not fail" on Saturday in a press conference earlier on Monday announcing the federal charges.

Joined by FBI head Kash Patel and US Attorney for DC Jeanine Pirro, he said the attack on Saturday provided "no better example" for why the East Wing ballroom needed to be constructed.
