Energy bill discounts worth £150 given to 250,000 British households

Labour has confirmed a major expansion of the Warm Home Discount scheme, with around 250,000 additional Scottish households set to qualify automatically for the £150 energy bill rebate from winter 2026/27.

New regulations approved by Parliament will extend the scheme until at least March 2031.

The changes mark a significant overhaul in how support is delivered to households in Scotland during the colder months when energy bills are typically at their highest.

The Warm Home Discount provides financial support to low-income households and pensioners struggling with energy costs.

Under the current system, households in Scotland have been required to apply directly to participating energy suppliers in order to receive the payment.

That differs from arrangements in England and Wales, where the Department for Work and Pensions already operates an automatic data-matching system.

Consumer groups have previously criticised the Scottish application process, arguing it created unnecessary confusion and left some eligible households missing out on support.

Labour said the new system would simplify access and ensure more families receive assistance automatically without needing to apply.

The reforms will bring Scotland into line with the automated process already used elsewhere across Britain.

According to Government figures, around 345,000 Scottish households are expected to receive the Warm Home Discount automatically each winter under the new arrangements.

That compares with approximately 95,000 households who previously qualified without needing to apply.

Overall, around 560,000 rebates are expected to be distributed across Scotland each year once the updated scheme takes effect.

Energy minister Miatta Fahnbulleh said: “We are extending the Warm Home Discount scheme until 2031, giving families certainty that support will continue to be there every winter.

“These changes mean hundreds of thousands more families in Scotland will get help automatically with their energy bills.”

The minister said the extension would provide greater long-term stability for households facing continued pressure from energy costs.

Households receiving the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit will usually qualify automatically for the £150 rebate. Some households claiming other means-tested benefits may also qualify depending on income levels, property details and energy costs.

The payment is applied directly to electricity accounts between October and March and does not need to be repaid.

Updated regulations also allow for backdated payments to be issued where eligible households previously missed out because of administrative errors.

Labour said households qualifying for the Warm Home Discount should receive a letter during the winter payment period confirming their eligibility.

Officials advised that anyone who believes they qualify but does not receive written confirmation should contact the Warm Home Discount helpline or their energy supplier.
